stigma

 

To me, stigma is the negative perception of a certain topic/behavior/group of people.

Stigma has affected me in many different ways, big and small. The stigma towards migraines is

something I dealt with ever since I was little. I don’t think most people know that migraines are

not just a “really bad headache” and can actually be a debilitating lifelong neurological disease. I

was born with chronic migraines as a child but it took 12 years for me to be finally diagnosed

due to the fact that my family did not take me seriously and thought that I brought these

migraines upon myself. I still struggle with the stigma today. For example, if I have to cancel

plans due to a migraine, a family member might blame me for getting a migraine by using the

computer too much instead of empathizing with me. Another stigma that has affected my life is

the stigma towards liking K-pop. When I first started listening to K-pop and learning Korean back

in 2011, I got a lot of judgment for that but at the time, I just ignored everyone and did my own

thing. Now it is 2020 and I sometimes still get made fun of liking Korean culture. Honestly these

days, I usually try to hide my interest in Korean music and language because the stigma still

persists.

I am a female (ascribed status) and based upon this status I have experienced being expected

to know how to cook, be very emotional, being maternal, know how to sew, and to be compliant.

The expectations of knowing how to cook, how to sew, and being maternal put a burden on me

and make me feel less of a woman or untalented because I am incapable of these things.

Though these things are not necessary, sometimes I feel scared that I wouldn't be a good wife

because of these things.

I am also Vietnamese (ascribed status) and based upon this status I have experienced being

expected to know how to speak Vietnamese fluently and to respect my elders. I’ve always

struggled with the fact that I can’t speak Vietnamese fluently and I feel ashamed when I can’t

speak to some of my relatives comfortably.

I am also a De Anza student (achieved status) and based upon this status I have experienced

being expected to not be as smart or hardworking as others who went to prestigious

universities. This stigma is totally untrue as I have seen so many intelligent and hard working

students here at De Anza. Going to a community college does not determine your value or work

ethic.

Lastly, I am a Cognitive Science major (achieved status) and based upon this status I have

been expected to be very smart and that is not necessarily true. While I don’t excel in all my

classes, I chose this major because I am passionate about participating in neurology research

but not because I excel in my STEM classes.

Today Technology

 

        Technology is fundamentally vital to modern society. It is crucial for how we produce and distribute food, for how we produce and distribute energy, and is prevalent in almost every aspect of urban life. Technology is good and useful in the way that it creates efficiency. With a smartphone, we can obtain all the knowledge of the world at our fingertips. Technology has changed the culture of our world. Technology has been an important aspect of my life ever since I was little. But not all good things come from technology. It is proven that increased screen time and social media has been linked with the increasing prevalence of depression and mental illness. This is a downside I can relate to personally, as too much time on social media creates a mindset where you constantly compare yourself to others and destroys your self-esteem. The culture of smartphones and social media has also caused a decrease in “real-life” social interaction which can be detrimental in youth for developing social skills. However overall, I believe that technology has benefited human society a lot more than it has harmed. (187)

I can relate to meeting great people online. I have met many of my friends online and also met

my significant other online. While I didn’t meet my best friend online, me and her mostly

interacted by doing things online such as playing games so technology is very impactful in my

life. (52)
